Polyphemus Moth

I found this "moth" or butterfly on the window of my van
this morning. He was huge (well for a moth or butterfly).
Anyone know for sure what he is? I'll change the title if my
guess is wrong.

  1. There's a way to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth - one rests with its wings up (butterfly?) and the other rests with wings flat (moth?).

  2. Chris, I'm pretty sure it is a Cecropia moth.

    They are so beautiful!

  3. Chris, my first guess (can I have another?) was the cecropia, but after looking again, I guess it isn't.

I had to look it up and I came up with Polyphemus moth, the one-eyed giant from Greek myths. He is quite stunning.

Thanks for the push to learn something new today! :-) I just love nature and science!
